Our People The TAGABAWA Tribe of Magpet, Cotabato Tagabawa- meaning galing sa Silangan or from the East is another tribe that had become a native of this municipality. According to Mr. Sonio Lamboy, the name Tagabawa was given by the old folks of Barangay kamada that had dwelt there earlier before their tribe settled in. Bagobo was originally the name of their teribe. People call them Tagabawa because they came from the eastern part of Davao. Tagabawa tribe dominated from the municipality of Makilala to Turil, Davao City. His father Sanday lamboy was a native of this Magpet, his father married Elena Bangcas, a native of Katigan, Turil Davao City and so Sonio and his brother Avelino Lamboy were born. It was along 1950’s when his father went back to Magpet and found a place here to work, that was when the territory of Davao was surveyed. That happened because of the inter-sectoral or intertribal affiliation of the City. They lose there area there, so his father decided to settle here. Year 1952 when the whole family transferred. When his family settled at Brgy. Kamada, they were blessed to have a comfortable life. His father worked with a large portion of land and raised many animals. That life wasn’t so luxurious then, a not so rich not so poor, just enough to earn from their farm, to have a simple shelter, clothing and the capacity to send their children at school even just until elementary and secondary level. Tagabawa tribe during ancient times like the manobo were used to a simple kind of life. To have something to eat, work and sleep is enough for them. But the family of Sonio used to have an early civilization, because they came from Davao where they had seen and witnessed the life of Cebuanos. About the cultures, traditions and beliefs, Manobo and Bagobo don’t differ so much. Differences are only cited on their dialect and how they pronounced words. An example of this differences are:
-the words ASA KA? In Bisaya is PAINGKANG KA in Manobo and is MANDA KA in Tagabawa or Bagobo The dog or IRO in Bisaya Is TOYANG in Manobo And is AS-O in Bagobo or Tagabawa On pronounciation: Fire or KAYO in Bisaya Is APO’Y in Manobo And is A-POY in Bagobo or Tagabawa. The father of Sonio was chosen in his time as Datu. He is respected and look-up to by their tribe. His farther knows a lot on settling conflicts and cases on the - - - under construction
