400 student writers compete for two-day campus journalism in Magpet

Some 400 elementary potential writers convened for a-two-day Division Schools Press Conference (DSPC) at the Apostol Memorial Elementary School (AMCES) in Magpet, North Cotabato November 6-7.

Department of Education North Cotabato division journalism in-charge Gloria Irig said the participants came from both public and private elementary schools in North Cotabato ’s 1st and 2nd congressional districts.

Barangay Pangao-an Region XII's best in sanitation practices

Barangay Pangao-an of Magpet once more proved it is a cut above the rest after it was adjudged as Barangay with Best Sanitation Practices for Region XII for the year 2008.

Nominated as North Cotabato’s entry for the regional level search for the barangay with the best sanitation practices, Pangao-an will represent Region XII in the national level competition.

HISTORY
Magpet derived its name from the word “Linoppot” which means “ a place where people gather in fellowship to partake of their packed lunch wrapped in banana leaves. An anonymous lexicographer inadvertently shortened the word “Linoppot” to”Maupot”. Much later, and further spelled into “Magpet” by a certain forester in his survey report. Consequently, the word “Magpet” stuck not only to mean the place but also the stream of the cool, fresh and clean water. By the present connotation, Magpet means “verdant lands of Many waters”

GEOGRAPHICAL
The municipality of Magpet is located in the eastern part of Cotabato Province and at the foothills of Mt. Apo with generally a sloping to mountainous terrain. Covering an area of approximately 75,536 has. Of vast agricultural and forestlands. It has 35 barangays that are classified into one urban area; the Poblacion and the rest (34) barangays are rural as per latest NSO classification with a population of 4,801 and 32,286 as of 1995, respectively. Furthermore, it is a landlocked municipality located at the boundary of the provinces of Cotabato and Davao del Sur. It is bounded on the north by the Mun. of Arakan; on the East by Davao City, on the West by President Roxas and by Kidapawan City on the South of Cotabato Province.

CLIMATE
The municipality falls under the fourth type of climber per Philippine classification, which is characterized by a more or less even distribution of rainfall throughout the year thus providing sufficient soil moisture for the growing of agricultural crops. Based on the climatic and rainfall data obtained from “PAG-AA”, University of Southern Mindanao (USM) of the municipality of Kabacan. Dry spells usually occur from November to April while May-October is wet season.

HISTORY OF MAGPET TOURISM
History of Magpet tourism date back on February 1933 when a group of 23 volunteers composed of a young professional and mountaineers explored trails in the wilderness of Magpet and Mt Apo. During their exploration they identified several points of interests: rainforest lakes and waterfalls. In the same trails the Magpet trails to Mount Apo established as the most leisurely, and the most beautiful and more accessible while witnessing elfin rainforest waterfalls lakes along waters.

By 1994 the climb to Mt Apo via Magpet was promoted nationwide in cooperation with the Department of Tourism of Region XXI. This promotion created such an tremendous impact for region in Magpet, that in one day alone tourist arrival richest 500 persons. Ever since has the Magpet become the favorite of become in the domestic region calling in the awesome adventure.

Overview of the Park

Historical Perspective and Land Area
On May 9, 1936 , Mt. Apo was declared as National Park by President Manuel L. Quezon through Presidential Proclamation No. 59 with an aggregate area of 76,900 hectares. On May 5, 1957 , President Carlos P. Garcia issued Proclamation No. 413 which amended Proclamation No. 59 and converted some 3,946 hectares into agricultural areas - reducing the park's land area to 72,954 hectares. Another 140.41 hectares were sliced-out for agricultural purposes in July 28, 1965 by virtue of Proclamation 424 - reducing the park's land area to 72,813 hectares. In December 16, 1965 President Diosdado Macapagal issued an amendment to Proclamation No. 59 through Proclamation 507-A which limit Mt. Apo 's permanent forest reserve to 33,736 hectares. Proclamation 507-A was revoked by President Ferdinand Marcos through Proclamation 35 dated May 8,1966 and restored Mt. Apo 's land area to 72,813 hectares. In March 29, 1983 Proclamation 2282 of President Ferdinand E. Marcos declared some 44,771 hectares of the park as alienable and disposable which decreased the park's land area to 25,041 hectares. However in June 17, 1986 Presidential Memorandum Order 17 of President Corazon C. Aquino reverted the alienable and disposable portions back to the park. Under Proclamation 853 issued by President Corazon C. Aquino on January 30, 1992 , 701 hectares was excluded from the park as geothermal reservation reducing the park area to 72,112 hectares. On September 24, 1996 , President Fidel Ramos issued Proclamation 882 declaring Mt.Apo as protected area under the category of natural park. Under Republic Act 9237otherwise known as Mt. Apo Protected Area Act of 2003, the effective park area was reduced to 54,974 hectares because peripheral areas of the park were established as buffer zones.

The TAGABAWA Tribe of Magpet, Cotabato

Tagabawa- meaning galing sa Silangan or from the East is another tribe that had become a native of this municipality.

According to Mr. Sonio Lamboy, the name Tagabawa was given by the old folks of Barangay kamada that had dwelt there earlier before their tribe settled in. Bagobo was originally the name of their teribe. People call them Tagabawa because they came from the eastern part of Davao. Tagabawa tribe dominated from the municipality of Makilala to Turil, Davao City.

His father Sanday lamboy was a native of this Magpet, his father married Elena Bangcas, a native of Katigan, Turil Davao City and so Sonio and his brother Avelino Lamboy were born.
